I’ve cleaned up the spelling and grammar of the letters where I felt it was necessary. I don’t do much, though, because I don’t want to take away the colloquial quality of these letters. I love the breezy abbreviations they used, but their spelling was atrocious and their comma use was negligible. Most changes are just to avoid confusion.
Most of the letters were written on YMCA stationary, which was provided to servicemen free of charge. Most are printed with admonishments to save paper by writing on both sides of each sheet (Sylvan was good about this, but other letter writers were not). Later, admonitions to buy Liberty Bonds started appearing, too.
